Paul T. Deuling of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, has received the Sagamore Hill Award, the highest honor given a hunter by the Boone and Crockett Club. Deuling received the award, named for the New York home of Theodore Roosevelt, for taking a World's Record mountain caribou in a hunt that exemplifies the sporting values that Roosevelt championed -- fair chase, self-reliance, perseverance, selective hunting, and mastery of challenges.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack have named Bob Model, long-standing member and chairman of Government Affairs for the Boone and Crockett Club, and seven other Club members to serve on a new Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council. The council is an official advisory group under the Federal Advisory Committee Act that will help to promote and preserve America's hunting heritage for future generations.

Each will be listed in the triennial Boone and Crockett Club 27th Big Game Awards book due out later this year. Conservation and Management of Mule and Black-tailed Deer -- Throughout the geographic range of mule deer and their black-tailed subspecies, we see a lot of variation in body size, coat color, antler shape, behavior, and other attributes. The large degree of physical variation observed in mule deer led early naturalists to collect mule deer from a few geographically distant locations and designate them as different subspecies because they differed slightly from one another.

In just the past 13 years, modern conservation efforts have produced an amazing 62 new state and provincial records--plus over 3,500 other Boone and Crockett-class trophies--for mule deer and elk alone. These special efforts and animals are profiled in two new books from the Boone and Crockett Club. Records of North American Mule Deer and Records of North American Elk are the first records books dedicated solely to these two species. Previously, mule deer and elk were combined into a single Boone and Crockett volume last printed in 1996.

By unanimous vote of its board of directors, the Dallas Safari Club (DSC) has officially adopted the Boone and Crockett Club scoring system for measuring North American trophies taken by DSC members. DSC will use the system for its trophy competition held annually since the 1980s. The formal adoption of Boone and Crockett scoring represents a major switch for the club, which has always used the Safari Club International system.

Consequences of maternal effects on body and antler size of white-tailed deer -- Although only one subspecies of white-tailed deer (O. v. dacotensis) inhabits South Dakota, deer occupying the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota are smaller than those in the eastern portion of the state. What would be the effect of improving nutrition of deer from the Black Hills? Would they increase in size and how long would it take for a change in nutrition to have a positive effect on growth?

Dr. Steve Cote, a scientist with the University Laval in Quebec, has indentified a situation which defies this conventional wisdom. Boy Scouts across the U.S. have a new destination for trekking, mountain climbing, shooting, wildlife watching and other adventures--the Boone and Crockett Club's Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch near Choteau, Montana. UM archivist Donna McCrea said the University library has sought the prestigious collection since the Boone and Crockett Club moved its headquarters from Virginia to Missoula in 1993.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar affirmed on March 6, 2009, the decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove gray wolves from the list of threatened and endangered species in the western Great Lakes and the northern Rocky Mountain states of Idaho and Montana and parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah. Wolves will remain a protected species in Wyoming.

Bush signed an Executive Order that called for federal agencies to facilitate the expansion and enhancement of hunting opportunities and the management of game species and their habitat. The Order also calls for a Wildlife Policy conference to lay the foundation for a ten-year Recreational Hunting and Wildlife Resource Conservation Plan. This conference is scheduled for October 2 -3, 2008 in Reno, Nevada.

Boone and Crockett Club President Lowell E. Baier has been named 2008 Budweiser Conservationist of the Year, an honor that comes with a $50,000 grant for a wildlife or habitat project of Baier's choice. The Potomac, Md., hunter was selected over three other nominees in an open-ballot vote on Budweiser's web site. He was honored this week in a ceremony in Las Vegas.
