As the Club's centennial project, the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch on the east front of the Rocky Mountains was purchased. This 6,000 acre facility lies in the foothills of the east slope of the Rocky Mountains near Dupuyer, Montana. The property abuts thousands of acres of national forest and wilderness areas and contains critical winter habitat for elk and mule deer. Additionally, whitetail deer, cougar, and grizzly and black bears regularly use this property and bighorn sheep and Rocky Mountain goats occur in adjacent national forest lands. This unique environment offers the perfect laboratory to study the coexistence of agricultural land uses and wildlife for research purposes. Job Summary:
The primary functions of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch are for demonstration, education and research. The ranch is a working cattle ranch of 6600 deeded acres with a herd of approximately 200 mother cows. The ranch provides hunting with an emphasis on youth hunting. It is currently enrolled in the Department of Fish Wildlife and Parks Block Management Program. The ranch is also used by visiting scholars and students with activities involving use of ranch lands coordinated with the ranch manager. The ranch manager is responsible for ranch operations, maintaining a healthy cattle herd, maintenance and repair of ranch buildings and fences, care of ranch equipment and maintaining healthy range conditions for both cattle and wildlife. The ranch manager also is responsible for maintaining relationships with adjoining landowners, government agencies including the Forest Service with whom TRMR has grazing permits, Club Members and those who utilize and/or are connected to the ranch.
Essential Functions include all or part of the following tasks:
1. Maintain a healthy cattle herd, healthy range conditions and viable ranch operation.
2. Ensure proper maintenance of ranch properties, buildings and equipment.
3. Oversee activities conducted on the ranch in terms of hunting, research and education.
4. Maintain permits and leases with the Forest Service and State.
5. Supervise seasonal labor.
6. Build and maintain an annual budget.
Additional Responsibilities:
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School or GED mandatory. Some college education preferred. Five years experience in managing a ranch and cattle operation.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
1. Knowledge of the Boone and Crockett Club’s mission, goals, and activities, and ability to discuss them with staff, board, members, prospective and current donors, neighbors and other outside parties.
2. Knowledge of basic computer skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
3. Must be proficient in managing multiple tasks and priorities.
4. Must reflect the values of the Boone and Crockett Club when interacting with others.
5. Must be willing to work in a team atmosphere and maintain a positive attitude with all individuals both internally and externally.
6. Must be adaptable to change and possess problem solving skills.
7. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
8. Must have written and verbal communication skills and be able to represent the Club in a professional manner.
9. Must be able to operate machinery associated with a ranch operation and have horsemanship skills.
10. Knowledge of plant and animal species.
Physical Demands:
The employee must sit, stand or walk for long periods of time; ride a horse, use a computer terminal; reach forward and to the side; bend from both standing and sitting position; and lift items weighing various pounds, including some heavy lifting. Some travel may be required.
